Use the site search page to find images you are looking for. Although images on this site have been organized into portfolios on a single subject, not all images are found in portfolios. Searching may be the best way to find all images related to a given subject.
Type in the parameters that apply to your search. Leave the rest blank. Clicking Search will send results in a list, along with their thumbnail images and captions. The thumbnails are linked to a viewing window so you can page through the selection as full-size images. Bookmarking this full-size viewing window will save the results of your search.
Here are some general instructions for using each of the parameters on the search form.
If you've been here before, know the number of the image you're looking for, and simply want to find that image, type it into this box. No other parameters are needed. Only one image will be found.
Search for the literal name, place, organization, event or other words that you can think of that would be included in its description. Check your spelling. Depending on how unique the word you're searching is, typing just the first few letters may get you what you want— "Martin" returns 114 records. "King" returns 267 records. "Martin and King" returns nothing, because it can't be found in the descriptive text.
You can use the Location field by itself or as a way to limit the results found by searching for text. If you want to find all images from a given location, just leave the By Text— field blank.
Location—City—State
Type the location in this box to limit your search of the text search above, or, without any other search terms, use this box to find all images from events that occurred at a particular place.
Limit Search to YearYou can further limit your results to one particular year by entering that year into the box.
You can limit your results to one particular photographer by choosing that photographer from the menu. Leaving all other search parameters blank will return all images by the photographer chosen.
If your results are not as you expect, try this approach. First use the New Search button to reset your search parameters. Then, in the Caption box, type a word from the name or event you're interested in. The search parameters are "sticky" so you can refine your results as you see them. Use city or state parameters to restrict results to that location.
