Title
Klansmen
Caption
Man on left (dark suit) is Robert Shelton (1930-2003) Grand Wizard of the United Klans of America. Four UKA members were convicted of bombing the 13th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham AL in 1963. Four black children were killed in the bombing, and many who have studied the Klan believe the bombing could not have been carried out without Shelton’s approval. In 1966 Shelton spent a year in jail and paid a $1,000 fine for refusing to turn over Klan membership lists to the House Un-American Activities Committee. The UKA was finally bankrupt and effectively finished by a lawsuit brought in 1987 by the Southern Poverty Law Center.: In 1994, Shelton said 'The Klan is my belief, my religion. But it won't work anymore. The Klan is gone. Forever.'
