Atlantic City, NJ: August 10, 1964. MFDP delegates challenge Mississippi Democrats at Democratic Convention, 1964 Mr. E.W. Steptoe, a dairy farmer from Amite County, was a local civil rights leader. He founded the Amite County NAACP in 1954, and opened his home to Bob Moses when voter registration was attempted. Steptoe was frequent target of police harassment. When Steptoe sent regards to the regular Mississippi delegation, an Amitte County regular replied that, Steptoe was alive only because, 'he owes me $400 and I wouldn't let anybody kill him.'
