AL: 1963. Woman marks a Black Panther ballot in primary election. Rather than join the segregationist Alabama Democratic Party, Lowndes County black voters formed their own party and voted in their own primary on May 3, 1963. The party symbol was a black panther, later adopted by black militants in California.
