These are photographs of a rural life that is at least partly gone. The remote sharecroppers cabins have mostly vanished , razed or burned as mechanization took over the cotton fields and their no longer needed occupants moved to nearby urban areas or to cities in the North. But many of the black communities still remain -- intimate, culturally rich, and still impoverished.
